Fresh Drama In Zamfara As Suspended Lawmakers Reject Apology Demand, Head To Court.

Published

on

According to Nivo News, nine suspended members of the Zamfara State House of Assembly have accused the state government and the Assembly leadership of deliberately withholding their salaries and allowances for almost two years following their suspension.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The affected lawmakers said they were suspended on February 27, 2024, after drawing attention to worsening insecurity in their respective constituencies. They claimed the suspension came shortly after they raised concerns about the safety of their constituents during Assembly proceedings.

Speaking on behalf of the group, Bashir Abubakar, who represents Bukkuyum North Constituency, alleged that the lawmakers were targeted for speaking out on security challenges confronting their areas. He said their decision to highlight insecurity was met with swift disciplinary action that resulted in their suspension.

The lawmakers further alleged that after their suspension, security agencies were mobilised to arrest them, a move they described as intimidation aimed at silencing dissenting voices within the legislature.

Reacting to the allegations, the Speaker of the Zamfara State House of Assembly, Bilyaminu Moriki, dismissed the claims, insisting that the suspension had nothing to do with insecurity issues. He stated that the lawmakers were sanctioned for violating legislative rules and procedures.

Moriki explained that the suspended members allegedly locked the Assembly chamber and went ahead to hold an unauthorised sitting while principal officers were still within the Assembly complex. He maintained that no legislator has the right to prevent others from accessing the chamber, adding that the Assembly acted in line with established laws.

On the issue of unpaid salaries, the suspended lawmakers accused the Assembly of operating unlawfully and sharing their entitlements among serving members. Aliyu Kagara, who represents Talata Mafara South Constituency, claimed their salaries had been withheld for about 22 months. He also alleged that budgets were passed without the constitutionally required quorum, noting that legislative business continued despite the Assembly having only 15 active members out of 24.

The Speaker, however, countered the claims, stressing that suspended lawmakers are not entitled to salaries or allowances and that all legislative actions taken during the period complied with the law.

Both parties confirmed that the matter is currently before the court. While the suspended lawmakers accused the state government and Assembly leadership of frustrating the judicial process, the Speaker denied the allegation.

Moriki also revealed that discussions had taken place regarding the possible reinstatement of the lawmakers, disclosing that Governor Dauda Lawal had agreed to their return on the condition that they submit apology letters to the Assembly, a proposal the lawmakers reportedly turned down.

TERROR IN THE COMMUNITY: Fulani Residents Living In Fear Of Sunday Igboho’s Security Outfit!.

Published

on

The emergence of the Iru Ekun Security Network, a private security group founded by Yoruba Nation advocate Sunday Adeyemo (Sunday Igboho), has sparked significant anxiety among Fulani residents in the South-West. While these residents support efforts to combat regional crime, they are deeply concerned by the profiling of the Fulani community as criminal suspects, arguing that such rhetoric fosters mistrust and obscures the identities of actual perpetrators.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

  • Fear and Profiling: Fulani residents report living in fear, noting that recent rhetoric from Igboho has specifically targeted their community. One anonymous resident claimed that suspects linked to recent kidnappings in Oyo State were not Fulani, suggesting that the community is being unfairly tarnished.

  • Disputed Rescue Claims: Controversy arose after reports suggested kidnapped victims in Oriire Local Government Area were released following an ultimatum from Igboho. Both the Oyo State Police Command and the local council chairman explicitly dismissed these claims as false, noting the victims remain in captivity.

  • Historical Context: Alhaji Salihu AbdulKadir, the Seriki Fulani of Oyo State who fled during the 2021 Igangan crisis, cautioned against ethnic profiling. He emphasized that the vast majority of Fulani are law-abiding business people and warned that such narratives threaten peaceful coexistence.

Regulatory Measures and Objectives

  • Government Regulation: In response to the rise of informal security groups, Governor Seyi Makinde issued an executive order on May 20, 2026, requiring security outfits to formally register with the state, wear identifiable uniforms, and operate within a legal framework.

  • Igboho’s Stance: Igboho has expressed willingness to comply with the state’s regulatory requirements while maintaining that Iru Ekun is currently awaiting federal authorization. He stated the group aims to “flush criminals out of our forests” and emphasized a desire to collaborate with statutory agencies like the Police, DSS, and the Army.

  • Proposed School Security: Following the abduction of pupils and teachers on May 15, 2026, Iru Ekun proposed stationing two trained personnel at each public school in Oyo State to prevent further incursions.

Security and Expert Perspectives

  • Recent Clashes: Reports indicated that members of Iru Ekun were injured during an exchange of gunfire while tracking suspected criminals within the Old Oyo National Park in late June 2026.

  • Expert Warning: Security expert Mathew Ibadin noted that while involving non-state actors can be beneficial, their operations must be strictly regulated and intelligence-led to prevent political or ethnic witch-hunts. Ibadin emphasized that these groups should work under a well-defined structure to ensure security is not politicized and that all residents feel a sense of belonging.
