Alex Otti Under Fire: APC Chieftain Claims He Ignored Tinubu’s Directive and Court Ruling
A senior member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State, Prince Paul Ikonne, has accused Governor Alex Otti of openly defying President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive on the operational autonomy of local government administrators in Nigeria.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Ikonne alleged that the Abia State governor is “seeking to amend existing laws or create new legislation that would allow him to control local government funds at his discretion.”
President Tinubu had recently expressed concern at the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the APC over several governors’ refusal to comply with the Supreme Court ruling on local government autonomy. He warned that he was prepared to take executive action, stating, “I have the knife, and I have the yam.”
Speaking to Television Continental (TVC), Ikonne, the immediate past Executive Secretary of the National Agricultural Land Development Authority (NALDA), contrasted Abia State with Lagos, noting that local governments in Lagos are actively executing projects, building schools and health centers, and empowering council-elected chairmen and councillors.
He emphasized that local governments represent the tier of government closest to the people, including farmers, the less privileged, widows, and persons with disabilities, and should not be manipulated for political or personal gain.
“Unlike Abia, where the governor is attempting to control funds by amending laws, Lagos and Enugu States demonstrate how local governments can positively impact citizens’ lives through proper project implementation,” Ikonne said.
Highlighting the financial implications, Ikonne noted that Abia’s 17 local governments receive an average of 7 to 8 billion Naira monthly. Yet, he said, the funds often fail to reach intended projects, with local government chairmen receiving only a fraction of allocations, limiting their capacity to address public needs.
He challenged the Otti administration to account publicly for the utilization of local government funds, criticizing the Labour Party-led state for what he described as the collapse of the local government system. “Residents cannot identify any single project executed by local authorities, undermining trust and local development,” he added.
Ikonne commended President Tinubu’s stance on local government autonomy, warning that politicizing the issue could mislead Nigerians and exacerbate challenges related to constitutional obedience among governors.

According to Daaor, Samuel later invited the woman to his residence in the Ahor area of Benin City, where he allegedly stabbed her to death with a knife.
The police commissioner stated that the suspect had been taken into custody and would be charged in court after investigations were concluded.
However, Samuel has offered a different account of the incident, claiming that the woman was injured during a struggle over a knife following an argument between them.
