The pardon was officially announced on Tuesday in Yola by Governor Fintiri’s Chief Press Secretary, Humwashi Wonosikou. The gesture was timed to coincide with Christmas and New Year celebrations. In addition to Jackson, the governor remitted the remainder of the sentences for five other inmates—Joshua James Audo, Adamu Ibrahim, Mohammed Abubakar, Ibrahim Usman, and Saidu Abubakar—housed at the Medium Security Custodial Centres in Numan and Jada.

Humwashi noted that the decision reflects the inmates’ significant improvements in behavior and conduct over time. Quoting the governor, he said, “In the exercise of my prerogative of mercy as enshrined in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and based on the recommendations of the Adamawa State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy, I have granted pardon to three persons and directed the remission of the remainder of the sentences of five others who have served various jail terms and demonstrated good conduct over the years.”
