Super Eagles Under Fire: Okocha Says Current Team Can’t Measure Up To 1996 Legends.
Legendary Nigerian midfielder Austin Jay-Jay Okocha has criticized the current Super Eagles squad, asserting that they would struggle to compete against the historic Nigerian team that won Olympic gold in 1996.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Okocha, a key figure in the celebrated Atlanta Olympic side, spoke candidly when asked to compare today’s national team with his generation. The 1996 squad, featuring stars such as Sunday Oliseh, Daniel Amokachi, Victor Ikpeba, and Nwankwo Kanu, is widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s greatest football teams. Their triumph in Atlanta marked Africa’s first Olympic gold in football, with memorable victories over Brazil and Argentina, including a dramatic semi-final win against Brazil that remains vivid in fans’ memories.
Commenting on the current team, Okocha dismissed any notion that they could match the achievements of his generation. “They stand no chance. It’s the number of goals that they will concede we should be talking about,” he said. “These are small boys. We are talking about Yekini, Oliseh, Nwankwo Kanu, Taribo West—I don’t even want to talk about myself. These boys are learners.”
While the present Super Eagles boast talented players such as Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, African Player of the Year Ademola Lookman, Alex Iwobi, Calvin Bassey, Samuel Chukwueze, and Ola Aina, Okocha’s critique centers on accomplishments rather than individual skill. Members of the 1996 Olympic team also featured in Nigeria’s first FIFA World Cup appearance in 1994 and won the Africa Cup of Nations in the same year. In contrast, the current squad has struggled in recent World Cup qualifiers and is yet to secure a continental title, despite several close calls.
With the next Africa Cup of Nations scheduled in Morocco, the Super Eagles face mounting pressure to respond to criticism and demonstrate that they can forge a legacy comparable to Nigeria’s golden generation.

He highlighted a collaborative framework for democracy: the government acts and explains its decisions, while the media observes and holds leadership accountable through questioning. Ultimately, he warned against allowing media outlets to amplify the messages of those intent on harming the nation.
Senate President Lauds Tinubu’s Performance
In a separate event, Senate President Godswill Akpabio lauded President Tinubu as a “miracle worker,” noting his administration’s prolific track record. Political Rebellion! Kwara APC Stakeholders Slam Door On Reps Candidate In Shock Move!.
A group of All Progressives Congress (APC) stakeholders in Kwara State has formally requested that Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq intervene regarding the party’s candidacy for the Ekiti/Irepodun/Isin/Oke-Ero Federal Constituency in the upcoming 2027 elections. Disputed Results: The petitioners claim that Abolarin Ganiyu won the primary with 17,128 votes, while the incumbent, Raheem Tunji Olawuyi, received only 2,978 votes. They expressed concern that Olawuyi, who reportedly placed sixth, is being presented as the winner.
-
Political Imbalance: The stakeholders argue that the constituency has suffered from political inequity since 1999, as the seat has consistently been held by representatives from either Irepodun or Isin local government areas. They noted that Ekiti and Oke-Ero, which collectively comprise 20 of the constituency’s 42 wards, have never produced a representative.
-
Call for Action: In their open letter, the leaders urged Governor AbdulRazaq to work with the APC national leadership to recognize Abolarin Ganiyu as the legitimate candidate. They stated that this correction is necessary to uphold justice, equity, and internal party democracy.
