The initiative, held in Abakaliki on Monday, was championed by the Wife of the Governor, Mrs. Uzoamaka Nwifuru, who described the event as “deeply emotional and meaningful,” emphasizing that no life is beyond redemption.

According to Mrs. Nwifuru, the program was carried out in collaboration with her pet project, Better Health for Rural Women, Children, and Internally Displaced Persons, and the state Ministry of Justice. She stressed that the effort reflects the principle that justice must be tempered with mercy and that true correction should lead to restoration.

“Behind the walls of correctional facilities are men and women who, despite past mistakes, still carry dreams, skills, and the desire to live meaningful and productive lives,” she said. “Today, 25 of such individuals are stepping out not just into freedom, but into hope, responsibility, and a new beginning.”

Mrs. Nwifuru also underscored her commitment to rehabilitation, noting that releasing inmates without equipping them for life after incarceration does not constitute true correction.

The Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Ben Odoh, praised the first lady for her magnanimity and urged the beneficiaries to embrace their new opportunities. He highlighted the overcrowding challenges in the state, revealing that a custodial center designed for 387 inmates currently holds 1,018, while the two prison facilities in Abakaliki and Afikpo house a combined total of 1,205 inmates.

Controller of the Correctional Centre, Mr. Chika Igwugwu, also lauded the first lady’s intervention, urging her to continue efforts that support inmate rehabilitation and empowerment.
