The Ugie Emobo, one of the most sacred ancient rituals of the Igue festival, commemorates the historic defeat of Benin’s giant, Prince Idubor, also known as Aruan, who resided in Udo, Ovia South West Local Government Area. Aruan had waged war against his brother, Prince Osawe, who later ascended the throne as Oba Esigie following Aruan’s defeat.
The ceremony featured the Oba performing majestic dances to the rhythm of soul-stirring traditional songs and the resonant drumbeats of the Ogbelaka group. The festivities began with a royal procession led by Oba Ewuare, who offered special salutations to his ancestors at the ‘Ugha-Ozolua’ section of the palace.
During the rites, Oba Ewuare also offered prayers of thanksgiving to God and the ancestors for the blessings and guidance received throughout the past year, reinforcing the spiritual and cultural significance of the festival.
