The Rivers State Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has officially expressed its support for the Interim State Working Committee of the Labour Party in Rivers State, led by Gogo Wellington.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The endorsement was announced by the Rivers State NLC Chairman, Comrade Alex Agwanwor, during a courtesy visit by the Labour Party’s Interim Executives to the NLC Secretariat in Port Harcourt on Friday.

Agwanwor affirmed that Wellington’s committee is the only legally recognized leadership of the Labour Party in Rivers State, emphasizing that no other group can legitimately claim the party’s executive structure in the state.

“There are people attempting to frustrate your efforts, but don’t be distracted. Stay focused on your mandate. The law establishing the state working committee is clear, so no one else can claim leadership of the Labour Party in Rivers State. Be confident in your role, and you have our full support,” he said.

In his remarks, Gogo Wellington, Chairman of the Interim State Working Committee, explained that the visit was intended to strengthen relations and foster collaboration with the NLC as a key stakeholder in the party. He highlighted that the Labour Party remains a central part of the labour movement and is committed to advancing its founding vision and ideals.

Wellington noted, “I have always wondered why there was a gap between the Labour Party and the NLC. The NLC is integral to the Labour Party, and the party cannot thrive without a cordial and functional relationship with the Congress. If the structures are properly integrated, the Labour Party will have strong grassroots support across the 23 LGAs in Rivers State. This will ensure our vision, ideology, and goals resonate effectively.”

He further assured the NLC of a cooperative and positive relationship with the party’s new executive committee. Wellington stated that the Labour Party is restructuring its structures from the state level down to Local Government Areas (LGAs) and wards, with active involvement from the NLC, the Trade Union Congress (TUC), and other partner bodies.

“We deemed it necessary to visit you, Mr. Chairman, to assure you of a productive and positive working relationship with this executive committee. As we restructure the party and form its structures from the state to the LGAs and wards, the NLC, TUC, and all related partner bodies will be integrated to ensure efficiency and effectiveness in the process,” he added.

‘You Lied’ – El-Rufai Denies Abusing Medical Visit, Demands ICPC Retraction.

Published

on

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has formally rejected claims by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) that he misused a court-approved medical visit while in detention, characterizing the agency’s account as a misrepresentation of both law and fact. Through his media adviser, Muyiwa Adekeye, the former governor has called for the immediate release of his personal physician, Professor Bello Abubakar, and requested that the ICPC retract its allegations regarding the violation of a court order.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

  • Medical Justification: El-Rufai’s representatives state that his inability to attend court on July 6 resulted from ongoing health issues that were communicated to the ICPC beforehand. They further assert that his personal doctor had been previously denied access to him at the commission’s facility, contradicting claims that the medical visit was a ploy to avoid court proceedings.

  • Interpretation of Court Orders: Adekeye disputed the ICPC’s allegation that a court order was breached, arguing that the April 1, 2026, order by Justice R.M. Aikawa grants El-Rufai the right to medical care without placing restrictions on visitors during those sessions.

  • Rejection of Political Claims: The former governor’s camp dismissed the description of the hospital visit as a political meeting, noting that it was the ICPC that rescheduled the appointment to a busier morning time slot and that commission staff were present throughout the duration of the visit.

  • Legal Rights and Compliance: El-Rufai’s team emphasized that medical access is a legal right, supported by the Nelson Mandela Rules and the existing court order. They warned that further efforts by the ICPC to restrict his access to family, legal counsel, or medical care could constitute contempt of court.
