According to Nivo News, the announcement was made on Friday, December 19, via the Super Eagles’ official account, marking a new leadership era for Nigeria’s national team. Ndidi, 28, has acknowledged the responsibility of the role and emphasised the importance of unity within the squad ahead of major tournaments, including the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
“It’s a huge responsibility, and with the support of the players, everything will run smoothly,” Ndidi told Super Eagles media. “I have had conversations with some of the players to ensure we are aligned and working together. The staff and the team are all in this together.”
Ndidi previously wore the captain’s armband during Nigeria’s 2026 World Cup playoff against DR Congo, where he led the team under coach Eric Chelle. His appointment as full-time captain follows Troost-Ekong’s announcement on December 4 that he was stepping away from international duty, making Ndidi the standout candidate to lead the national team.
Since making his debut in 2015 under Sunday Oliseh, Ndidi has earned 71 caps for Nigeria. At club level, he recently concluded an eight-year spell with Leicester City and joined Besiktas, where he was named vice-captain in October. The new captain now faces the challenge of guiding Nigeria as the Super Eagles aim to reclaim continental supremacy and contend for the 2025 AFCON title.
