Bishop Kukah Pays Solidarity Visit To Nnamdi Kanu In Sokoto Custody.
According to Nivo News, the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Most Rev. Matthew Hassan Kukah, has visited the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, at the Sokoto Correctional Centre.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The visit was made public on Thursday by former African Action Congress presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, who praised the cleric’s gesture, describing it as a powerful show of compassion and solidarity at a difficult moment.
Sowore noted that Bishop Kukah’s presence underscored the support of the Sokoto Catholic Diocese for Kanu, commending the cleric for taking time to visit the detained IPOB leader.
Kanu was convicted on November 20, 2025, by the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on terrorism-related charges and was sentenced to life imprisonment. He was transferred to the Sokoto Custodial Centre the following day, in line with a court order directing that he be held in any correctional facility other than Kuje Prison, where he had previously been detained.
The conviction followed his trial on seven counts, including allegations of incitement and unlawful broadcasting, instituted by the Federal Government. Justice James Omotosho found him guilty on all charges and imposed the maximum sentence.
Since his relocation to Sokoto, Kanu’s detention has continued to generate legal and public reactions, with his legal team filing motions seeking his transfer back to Abuja to enable effective preparation for his appeal. The defence has argued that the distance poses challenges in accessing court documents, consulting with lawyers, and adequately pursuing post-conviction legal remedies.
They have also maintained that Nigeria lacked the jurisdiction to prosecute him over broadcasts allegedly made from the United Kingdom, insisting that the trial process was hurried and fundamentally flawed.
In the weeks following his transfer, several prominent Nigerians, including Abia State Governor Dr Alex Otti and Sokoto State Governor Ahmad Aliyu, have also visited Kanu at the custodial centre.
