A devastating fire engulfed Kasuwar Katako, the popular timber market in Gombe, late Monday night, destroying numerous shops and goods valued at millions of naira. According to official reports, Gombe State Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya described the fire as “painful and distressing,” highlighting its severe impact on the livelihoods of hardworking market traders. In a statement signed by the Director-General of Press Affairs at Government House, Ismaila Uba Misilli, the governor extended his sympathies to those affected and assured that the government stands with them during this difficult period.
Governor Yahaya directed the Gombe State Emergency Management Agency (GSEMA) and other relevant bodies to assess the damage, investigate the cause of the fire, and provide urgent relief to support affected traders. He praised the rapid response of the Gombe State Fire Service, personnel from Gombe State University, the Federal Fire Service, private water tanker operators, security agencies, and the Nigerian Red Cross Society, noting that their efforts prevented a more catastrophic outcome.
The statement also confirmed that one firefighting truck was involved in an accident during the operation. The governor expressed concern and offered prayers for the speedy recovery of those injured.
While urging calm among traders, Yahaya reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to enhancing fire prevention and emergency response measures across the state. Plans are reportedly underway to establish a state-of-the-art fire service facility to improve response capabilities in the future. “We will do everything possible to ensure such incidents are minimised in the future,” he assured.
