Inside Aso Rock: How Buhari’s Aides Allegedly Tried To Impose Lawan As APC Flagbearer.
According to Nivo News, a newly released biography on late former President Muhammadu Buhari has unveiled dramatic behind-the-scenes power struggles within the Presidential Villa, exposing alleged attempts by influential aides to manipulate his authority for political gain.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The revelations are contained in From Soldier to Statesman: The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari, authored by Dr. Charles Omole and unveiled in Abuja on Monday. The book launch attracted several prominent figures, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Gambian President Adama Barrow.
The biography sheds light on a tense episode that reportedly unfolded on the eve of the 2022 All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential primaries. It alleges that powerful figures within Buhari’s inner circle approached the heads of Nigeria’s key security agencies — the Inspector-General of Police, the Director-General of the Department of State Services, and the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency — claiming they were acting on presidential instructions to deploy security forces to ensure Ahmad Lawan emerged as the party’s consensus candidate.
However, the account states that then Inspector-General of Police, Alkali Baba, immediately questioned the authenticity of the directive and cautioned his counterparts against acting on it. The security chiefs subsequently sought a direct meeting with Buhari to clarify the matter.
During the meeting, the former president reportedly dismissed the claims, insisting he had issued no such instruction regarding the party convention. When informed that celebrations had already begun in Lawan’s neighbourhood based on the alleged endorsement, Buhari was said to have laughed, stressing that he had not anointed any aspirant.
The book quotes Buhari as maintaining that Nigerians should freely choose their leaders and that security agencies must remain neutral and uninvolved in partisan politics, a stance the author describes as consistent with his long-held resistance to politicising state institutions.
The biography also revisits the controversial 2018 removal of former DSS Director-General Lawal Daura by then Acting President Yemi Osinbajo. While Buhari declined to reverse the decision, the book notes that he believed doing so would undermine institutional order. It further claims that the move was significantly influenced by the former First Lady, Aisha Buhari, a detail the author says was not widely documented at the time.
In one of the most striking disclosures, the book recounts a family dispute that escalated into gunfire within the Presidential Villa, involving a police officer attached to the First Lady’s office. Buhari’s Chief Security Officer, Idris Abubakar, reportedly ordered the immediate arrest of the officer.
Investigations later revealed the involvement of members of the First Family, prompting Buhari to enforce strict discipline without regard for family ties. The book recounts that a nephew was ordered to leave the Villa, underscoring Buhari’s insistence that personal relationships would not excuse misconduct.
Dr. Omole concludes that these episodes challenge the perception of Buhari as a passive leader, portraying instead a man whose restraint was driven by principle and a desire to uphold institutional integrity, separating the individual from the myths that often defined his presidency.
