According to Nivo News, the announcement was made by the Executive Secretary of the NUC, Professor Abdullahi Yusufu Ribadu, during the 10th convocation ceremony of Gregory University, Uturu, Abia State, held over the weekend.

Ribadu explained that the decision was part of deliberate efforts to open up Nigeria’s education sector to increased investment while strengthening the overall quality and relevance of university education in the country. He noted that reopening the higher education space to foreign institutions aligns with broader reforms designed to reposition the system and improve graduate outcomes.

He stated that the move would encourage foreign direct investment in education and make Nigerian universities more competitive at the global level. Ribadu, who was represented at the ceremony by Offor Chukwuemeka, disclosed that the NUC has already rolled out comprehensive reforms to ensure Nigerian graduates are better positioned for global opportunities.

The NUC boss revealed that collaborations with foreign universities would be guided by six operational models, including franchise arrangements, branch campuses, twinning or articulation programmes, open and distance learning, acquisition, and teaching institutions.

He further disclosed that a code of governance for private universities has been introduced to promote uniform standards and ensure proper regulation across institutions. Ribadu added that the commission is also undertaking curriculum re-engineering by transitioning from the Benchmark Minimum Academic Standards to the Core Curriculum and Minimum Academic Standards.

According to him, the revised curriculum framework adopts a 70:30 ratio, with the NUC providing 70 per cent of mandatory core courses required for graduation, while universities are given the flexibility to design the remaining 30 per cent to reflect their areas of strength and specialization.

Ribadu also stressed the importance of equipping students with 21st-century employability skills, commending the management of Gregory University for its contributions to educational transformation in Nigeria.

In his remarks, Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, praised the founder of Gregory University, Professor Gregory Ibe, for his vision and commitment to advancing education. Represented by the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Professor Uche Eme Uche, the governor said the university has made significant positive impacts and reaffirmed the state government’s dedication to driving an educational revolution.

The state Commissioner of Police, Patrick Daaor, disclosed that the suspect and the deceased initially connected online and developed a friendship after communicating for several months.

According to Daaor, Samuel later invited the woman to his residence in the Ahor area of Benin City, where he allegedly stabbed her to death with a knife.

The police commissioner stated that the suspect had been taken into custody and would be charged in court after investigations were concluded.

However, Samuel has offered a different account of the incident, claiming that the woman was injured during a struggle over a knife following an argument between them.

Speaking in an interview, the 21-year-old insisted that he did not intend to kill her.

“On the day she came to my house, we were discussing, but the discussion snowballed into an argument. In the process, she picked up a knife and intended to stab me,” he claimed.

Samuel further alleged that the woman sustained an injury to her neck while they were struggling over the knife.

He maintained that he attempted to save her after she was injured but was unable to prevent her death.

“I didn’t mean to kill her. I tried to save her after she was injured, but she died,” he said.
