“Lai Mohammed Declares Banditry In Northern Nigeria Is About Resources, Not Just Kidnapping”.
Former Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, has emphasized that banditry in Northern Nigeria extends beyond mere kidnapping and is fundamentally linked to control over resources. He noted that during a town hall meeting in Katsina attended by ministers of Interior, Defense, and other officials, the then Katsina State Governor, Aminu Masari, highlighted that the earliest recorded instance of banditry in the state dates back to 1891. Mohammed stated, “Anyone who believes banditry is a recent phenomenon is mistaken. It must be seen beyond kidnapping or cattle rustling.”
In the same interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, Mohammed addressed claims surrounding the October 20, 2020, EndSARS protests at the Lekki Tollgate. He maintained that while casualties occurred nationwide, including the deaths of 37 policemen and six soldiers, there was no massacre at the tollgate.
He criticized media reports, including those by CNN, for relying on what he described as poorly sourced information. Mohammed remarked, “The Lekki Tollgate incident is the only alleged massacre in the world with no bodies. Deaths occurred in Alimosho and other areas, but not at the tollgate. I challenge anyone to present a case that their child did not return home from the tollgate.”
Mohammed also revealed that he dedicated an entire chapter to the event in his book Headlines and Soundbites: Media Moments That Defined An Administration, aiming to correct public misconceptions surrounding the protests.
