CJN Kekere-Ekun Slams Slow Court Processes, Warns Judges Against Political Manipulation.

Abuja – The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has cautioned judges against actions that may portray them as instruments of political manipulation. Speaking at the ceremonial commencement of the Federal High Court 2025/2026 legal year and the 41st annual Judges Conference on Monday, she highlighted concerns over conflicting interim orders, forum shopping, and misuse of ex parte applications, particularly in pre-election matters.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Justice Kekere-Ekun also addressed the chronic delays in the administration of justice, urging judges to actively manage cases and guide proceedings to ensure timely resolution. She emphasized that the National Judicial Council (NJC) would continue to enhance oversight of case progression to strengthen institutional discipline and efficiency.

On welfare and security, the CJN reaffirmed the Judiciary’s commitment to improving working conditions, infrastructure, research support, and the safety of judicial officers, noting that a judge who feels insecure cannot dispense justice effectively. She stressed the importance of renewed institutional discipline, deeper digitization, and an unwavering commitment to integrity.

Commending the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice John Tsoho, for his leadership, the CJN highlighted the court’s central role in Nigeria’s legal system, handling critical matters such as revenue, taxation, immigration, maritime operations, and intellectual property. She noted that the Federal High Court’s decisions directly influence national policy and public confidence in the rule of law, which remains fragile.

Justice Kekere-Ekun warned that unpredictable or inefficient court processes could undermine well-reasoned judgments. She emphasized punctuality, consistency in court sittings, and transparent communication with litigants and counsel as vital to effective justice delivery. “Our judgments constitute our voice, and the manner in which we discharge our duties defines the authority and credibility of that voice,” she stated.

The CJN also highlighted judicial independence anchored on responsibility, courage, and moral clarity, while commending Federal High Court judges for maintaining professionalism under public scrutiny. She urged the adoption of digital reforms, including virtual hearings, e-filing, electronic case tracking, and secure digital records, as essential tools to enhance efficiency, accountability, and public trust.

Justice Tsoho, in his remarks, noted that at the end of the 2023/2024 legal year, 161,999 cases were carried over, with 19,925 new filings, bringing the total to 181,924 pending cases. Of these, 16,019 cases were disposed of, leaving 165,905 pending, including civil, criminal, motion, and fundamental human rights cases. He provided a breakdown of pending cases, reporting 44,650 civil cases, 44,078 criminal cases, 46,228 motions, and 30,949 fundamental rights applications still unresolved.
