Wike Vs. Fubara: New Political Battle Erupts Over Rivers State Cabinet Composition.
A new dispute has surfaced between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, over the composition of Rivers State’s cabinet. According to sources familiar with the matter, the disagreement stems from unresolved elements of a peace agreement brokered months ago by President Bola Tinubu.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The peace deal, intended to settle a prolonged political crisis that led to a six-month state of emergency in Rivers State, appears to be under strain as key issues remain unsettled. Following his reinstatement in September, Governor Fubara retained eight commissioners who were unaffected by a Supreme Court ruling recognizing Martins Amaewhule as the legitimate Speaker of the State Assembly. Prior to this, he had dissolved his cabinet at the end of the emergency period to allow for the formation of a new executive council.
Despite numerous meetings between the governor and lawmakers, sources revealed that no agreement has yet been reached on commissioner nominations. Lawmakers reportedly plan to reject any nominees who do not align with the Wike camp to maintain influence over the state’s political structure.
A top Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) official stated that Minister Wike is seeking a significant share of cabinet appointments, allegedly requesting as many as 12 commissioner positions. “If you want 12 commissioners, what will the governor have left? Asking for three, four, or even five commissioners is understandable, but 12 is excessive, particularly after taking over all 23 local government areas,” the source said.
However, Chimelem Wodi, a close ally of Wike, dismissed these claims, describing them as the work of political opportunists spreading misinformation to regain relevance. Wodi emphasized Wike’s political stature, noting his extensive career as a former local government chairman, former ALGON National Chairman, former governor, and now a federal minister.
Wodi further argued that the President had already settled the political issues in Rivers State and that any purported demands for cabinet positions would have been formally communicated. He also noted that Wike’s silence on the matter reflects that the issue has been resolved and that circulating rumors are only likely to inflame tensions.
