₦6 Trillion NDDC Audit: SERAP Demands Tinubu, AGF Publish Names Of Indicted Officials.
The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), to immediately implement a court judgment directing him and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to publish the names of individuals implicated in the alleged ₦6 trillion misappropriation at the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The funds in question were intended for the completion of 13,777 abandoned projects and the overall operations of the NDDC between 2000 and 2019. The judgment was issued on November 10 by Hon. Justice Gladys Olotu following a Freedom of Information suit filed by SERAP.
The court further instructed Fagbemi and the president to release the NDDC forensic audit report submitted to the federal government on September 2, 2021. In a letter dated December 13, SERAP deputy director Kolawole Oluwadare warned that the continued failure to comply with the ruling undermines Nigeria’s legal and judicial systems and the rule of law.
SERAP cited Section 287(1) of the 1999 Constitution, emphasizing that court decisions are enforceable nationwide and failure to obey constitutes a breach of the Constitution and international obligations. The organization also noted that disobedience exposes officials to contempt proceedings and personal liability.
The group stressed that immediate compliance would demonstrate the administration’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and the rule of law, while helping restore public trust in the management of Nigeria’s wealth and natural resources. Justice Olotu had affirmed that the NDDC forensic audit report and names of those indicted qualify as public records under the Freedom of Information Act and are not exempt from disclosure.
SERAP concluded that implementing the judgment would reinforce President Tinubu’s stated commitment to improving the welfare of the Niger Delta region and addressing long-standing challenges.
