The session, held at the Coronation Hall of the Government House in Kano, attracted lawmakers, civil society organisations, development partners and representatives of various citizen groups. Attendees were given the opportunity to present their views and submit recommendations ahead of the final consideration and passage of the budget.
Addressing participants, the Speaker of the House, Jibril Ismail Falgore, highlighted the legislature’s responsibility in steering the state’s development agenda through diligent scrutiny of the budget. He stressed that the appropriation bill remains the main vehicle through which government policies and programmes are translated into concrete actions that directly affect the lives of residents.
Falgore commended the state governor for submitting the 2026 budget proposal early, noting that the timely presentation had provided the Assembly with adequate time to carry out a detailed and comprehensive review. He assured stakeholders that the proposed ₦1 trillion budget, with education projected to receive the highest allocation, would undergo strict examination to guarantee transparency, accountability and value for public funds in line with Kano State’s development goals.
The Speaker further pledged that all submissions and recommendations made by civil society groups, development partners and citizens would be carefully reviewed and factored into the legislative process.
Earlier, the Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriation, Aminu Sa’adu, welcomed participants and described the strong turnout as evidence of inclusive governance. He explained that the public hearing was intended to create a platform through which citizens could directly influence government spending priorities.
Sa’adu stated that contributions made during the session would assist the Assembly in aligning budgetary allocations with the real needs of the people, especially at the grassroots level. He added that key issues raised would be reflected in the final budget to drive development across critical sectors of the state.
The public hearing is expected to play a significant role in shaping ongoing legislative deliberations on the 2026 Appropriation Bill, further reinforcing Kano State’s commitment to participatory budgeting and accountable governance.
