The demolished structures include Jessy Best Hotel and Ugwudi Cottage Hospital’s mortuary services, both situated along the Owerri-Aba Road in Ngor Okpala Local Government Area.

Commissioner of Police Aboki Danjuma stated that the demolition followed a directive from Governor Hope Uzodimma after intelligence revealed the facilities were being used as hideouts for criminal activities related to organ harvesting. He said, “The order to demolish the properties was issued by Governor Hope Uzodimma. The owner, Stanley Oparaugo, has been declared wanted for refusing to honour police invitations. Credible intelligence indicated that these properties served as hubs for criminal operations.”

Danjuma added that the mortuary was under suspicion following reports of mutilated bodies being discovered at the facility. “The suspect can run, but he cannot hide. The law will catch up with him,” he asserted.

Health Commissioner Chioma Egu explained that the demolition was crucial to prevent health and security risks, noting that the facility was unregistered and that vital organs were missing from some corpses deposited there.

Ngor Okpala Local Government Area Chairman, Chika Ibekwe, praised the governor’s directive, emphasizing that the community welcomed the action as part of efforts to ensure safety for residents and visitors.

The demolition operation was carried out by a team led by Chinasa Nwaneri, special adviser to the governor on monitoring and compliance.

The development comes a week after a joint team of government officials and police discovered hundreds of mutilated bodies in the mortuary, raising serious concerns about suspected organ harvesting activities in the area.

The state Commissioner of Police, Patrick Daaor, disclosed that the suspect and the deceased initially connected online and developed a friendship after communicating for several months.

According to Daaor, Samuel later invited the woman to his residence in the Ahor area of Benin City, where he allegedly stabbed her to death with a knife.

The police commissioner stated that the suspect had been taken into custody and would be charged in court after investigations were concluded.

However, Samuel has offered a different account of the incident, claiming that the woman was injured during a struggle over a knife following an argument between them.

Speaking in an interview, the 21-year-old insisted that he did not intend to kill her.

“I didn’t mean to kill her, but she got injured in the process of struggling with her for the knife during an argument,” he said.

The suspect explained that he had met the woman on social media and that their friendship developed over several months of online conversations before she decided to visit him.

He said they were initially having a discussion at his residence, but the conversation eventually escalated into an argument.

“On the day she came to my house, we were discussing, but the discussion snowballed into an argument. In the process, she picked up a knife and intended to stab me,” he claimed.

Samuel further alleged that the woman sustained an injury to her neck while they were struggling over the knife.

He maintained that he attempted to save her after she was injured but was unable to prevent her death.

“I didn’t mean to kill her. I tried to save her after she was injured, but she died,” he said.
