AFCON 2025 Shockwaves: Meet The Six Players Expected To Rewrite History This Decem.ber
According to Nivo News, anticipation is building ahead of the 35th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), set to commence in Morocco on December 21 and conclude with the final in Rabat on January 18. The host nation is looking to secure their first title since 1976, while Egypt’s Mohamed Salah arrives determined to shift attention away from speculation surrounding his Liverpool future as he leads the Pharaohs’ quest for their first championship since 2010.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
As excitement grows, six standout footballers have emerged as key figures expected to shape the tournament’s direction.
Morocco’s Azzedine Ounahi remains one of the most talked-about stars among home fans. With captain Achraf Hakimi racing against time to regain fitness, the Girona midfielder is seen as the creative force capable of illuminating Morocco’s campaign. After struggling for form at Marseille following his breakout World Cup in 2022, Ounahi’s move to La Liga has reignited his confidence. With seasoned players like goalkeeper Yassine Bonou and striker Youssef En-Nesyri anchoring both ends of the pitch, Morocco’s Group A clashes against Comoros, Mali and Zambia may depend heavily on whether Ounahi can supply the ingenuity needed in Hakimi’s possible absence.
Algeria’s Mohamed Amoura is also drawing significant attention after a remarkable 2025. The Wolfsburg striker leads all African players in World Cup qualifying goals this year, having netted 11 times in eight matches, including a memorable hat-trick against Mozambique. Now an established figure alongside Riyad Mahrez, his sharp movement and aerial threat—despite his modest height of 5 feet 7 inches—make him a lethal presence in Group E, where Sudan, Burkina Faso and Equatorial Guinea stand as opponents.
For Nigeria, Victor Osimhen remains central to their ambitions as they return to the continental stage. Despite scoring a brilliant hat-trick in a dominant win over the Benin Republic, the Super Eagles still fell short of automatic qualification for the 2026 World Cup. Their struggles without him underscored his value, as the team managed only four points from fifteen during his absence. The Galatasaray forward’s importance to coach Eric Chelle’s system was further highlighted when Nigeria faltered in the play-off against DR Congo after he was forced off at half-time. Nigeria’s Group C journey against Tanzania, Uganda and 2004 champions Tunisia could hinge on Osimhen’s availability and form.
Senegal, still guided by the star power of Sadio Mané, may unveil a new revelation in 17-year-old Ibrahim Mbaye. The Paris Saint-Germain forward has already scored on his senior international debut and recently became Senegal’s youngest-ever goalscorer at 17 years and 298 days after scoring in an emphatic win over Kenya. With experience in both the Champions League and the European Super Cup, Mbaye is one to watch as Senegal navigate Group D against Botswana, DR Congo and Benin.
Uganda’s resurgence sees Rogers Mato stepping forward as a decisive figure as the Cranes return to AFCON for the first time since 2019. Currently joint-top scorer in North Macedonia with Vardar, Mato has become essential to Paul Put’s attacking strategy. Uganda’s tough Group C fixtures—featuring former champions Nigeria and Tunisia along with a derby battle against Tanzania—place added pressure on Mato to deliver the cutting edge required for progress.
Mozambique, seeking a historic breakthrough into the knockout stage for the first time, will lean heavily on Reinildo, who made history this year as the first Mozambican to play in the English Premier League following his move from Atletico Madrid to Sunderland. The 31-year-old left-back has earned praise for his leadership and resilience, with national legend Tico Tico commending his ability to unite the squad. With Group F opponents Ivory Coast, Cameroon and Gabon posing immense challenges, Reinildo’s influence will be vital if the Mambas hope to surpass expectations.

The state Commissioner of Police, Patrick Daaor, disclosed that the suspect and the deceased initially connected online and developed a friendship after communicating for several months.
According to Daaor, Samuel later invited the woman to his residence in the Ahor area of Benin City, where he allegedly stabbed her to death with a knife.
The police commissioner stated that the suspect had been taken into custody and would be charged in court after investigations were concluded.
However, Samuel has offered a different account of the incident, claiming that the woman was injured during a struggle over a knife following an argument between them.
Speaking in an interview, the 21-year-old insisted that he did not intend to kill her.

The police are expected to conclude their investigation before proceeding with the case in court.
