A United States Air Force intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) aircraft is actively monitoring Babana, a strategic border crossing between Nigeria and the Benin Republic, known for militant smuggling operations. Security analyst Brant Philip confirmed the ongoing surveillance on (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, emphasizing that Babana remains a critical point of interest due to its proximity to Basso in Benin, which recently experienced an attack by armed militants. The Nigerian Army previously clashed with unidentified gunmen along this corridor in August, highlighting the area’s persistent security challenges.

Basso, located just a few kilometers from Babana, was targeted in recent months, though the assault was largely repelled. No group has formally claimed responsibility for the attack. Both Babana and Basso lie along the same smuggling route, which authorities report has increasingly become a conduit for cross-border arms trafficking.

In a separate incident, operatives of the Benue Police Command successfully thwarted an armed bandit attack on vehicles along Adoka Road, rescuing passengers left stranded by the assailants. Sources, including Zagazola Makama, reported that around 00:30 hours on Wednesday, armed bandits targeted vehicles along the route. Police officers, led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), deployed patrol teams and tactical units to intercept the attackers. A subsequent gunfight forced the bandits to flee into the bush, leaving the passengers unharmed.
