Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, met with his Benin Republic counterpart, Olushegun Bakar, on Thursday in Abuja to discuss regional security and the recent attempted coup in Benin. According to Tuggar, much of Nigeria’s insecurity is driven by external factors, noting the close ties between Nigeria and Benin, where events in one country inevitably affect the other. He stressed that a coordinated regional response is now essential to maintain stability.
Both ministers highlighted the strong collaboration between their countries and agreed that further cooperation is critical. Bakar commended Nigeria for its swift support in responding to Benin’s request for ECOWAS intervention, describing the recent events as proof that democracy remains resilient in Africa.
Bakar explained that the call for Nigerian troops was crucial due to the strategic positioning of the coup plotters, requiring precise aerial operations to neutralize threats without harming civilians. He also advocated for the creation of a standby regional force to prevent similar threats in the future.
“The synergy between Nigeria and Benin was instrumental in restoring stability, and the situation in Benin is now fully under control,” Bakar stated.
