his Beninese counterpart, Olushegun Adjadi Bakari.
The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) had previously explained that the aircraft was on a ferry mission to Portugal when it experienced a technical issue, necessitating an emergency landing in Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso, in line with standard aviation safety procedures. Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, NAF spokesperson, described the landing as a precautionary measure in compliance with international aviation regulations.
The Confederation of Sahel States (AES), comprising Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger, had accused Nigeria of violating Burkinabe airspace, labeling the landing an “unfriendly act” contrary to international law. AES also authorised member states to neutralise any unauthorised aircraft within their airspace.
Addressing questions about the soldiers’ status, Tuggar confirmed that they remain in Burkina Faso, adding that discussions are ongoing to resolve the situation diplomatically. He stated, “Yes, they are. We are discussing how we can resolve this delicate matter as quickly as possible, and it’s being handled diplomatically.”
Beninese Foreign Minister Olushegun Bakari clarified that the incident had no connection to Nigeria’s military assistance in foiling a recent coup attempt in the Benin Republic, a position supported by Tuggar. The Nigerian Foreign Minister emphasized that the plane developed a technical problem en route to Portugal and was forced to land at the nearest airport, in accordance with ICAO regulations and international law. Tuggar noted, “It can happen to any country. Tomorrow, a Burkinabe plane could be forced to land in Kano, Maiduguri, or elsewhere.”
According to Nivo News, diplomatic efforts are ongoing to ensure the safe return of the personnel and the aircraft.
