Nigeria Confirms Military Personnel Still Detained In Burkina Faso Amid Rising Tensions.

The incident has intensified tensions between Nigeria and the Confederation of Sahel States (AES), which includes Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger. The regional bloc accused Nigeria of violating airspace and national sovereignty, though the NAF maintained that the aircraft had made an emergency landing in Bobo Dioulasso, Burkina Faso, en route to Portugal, due to a technical malfunction.
Sources indicated that despite the aircraft adhering to proper international aviation procedures, AES officials are reportedly using the situation as leverage in response to Nigeria’s involvement in decisions that influenced the bloc’s internal affairs, which led to their withdrawal from certain agreements.
A government source revealed, “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has intervened. The aircraft was prepared to resume its journey to Portugal on Tuesday, but signals from Burkina Faso remain unclear. This matter is being handled through diplomatic channels.”
Kimiebi Ebienfa, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, clarified that earlier reports of the soldiers’ and aircraft’s release were inaccurate. “They have not been released as of now. The federal government is actively engaging Burkina Faso to ensure their safe return,” he said, emphasizing that all diplomatic avenues are being pursued to resolve the situation.
