INEC Reveals Why Anambra Vote-Buying Suspects Are Still Free.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has explained why those arrested for vote-buying during the recent Anambra State governorship election have not yet faced prosecution.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Speaking at a stakeholders’ forum on elections organised by the Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room in Abuja on Thursday, INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan stated that the Commission is unable to prosecute the suspects because security agencies have not submitted their investigation reports.
Amupitan emphasized that, although INEC has the legal authority to prosecute electoral offenders, it does not have the statutory mandate or capacity to carry out arrests. “I am pleased that the public is aware that arrests were made, and questions are being asked about the next steps. We are coordinating with the police, the EFCC, and other relevant agencies. We require their investigative reports on the arrested individuals before proceeding,” he said.
He added, “The authority of INEC lies in prosecution, not arrest. We currently lack that capacity. We are working closely with law enforcement agencies to ensure that those detained will eventually face trial.”
The INEC chairman also highlighted the need to balance technological advancement with political accountability to safeguard Nigeria’s democracy. While the Commission continues to enhance election technology, he noted that successful elections ultimately depend on the responsibility of political actors.
Amupitan further lamented that weak telecommunication networks remain a major obstacle to the Commission’s ability to upload election results in real time from the country’s 176,000 polling units. Many polling locations, he explained, are in remote areas with poor connectivity, making instantaneous result transmission a persistent challenge despite INEC’s ongoing efforts.
