UN, Global Partners Unveil Bold Youth-Driven Battle Against Plastic Pollution In FCT, Nasarawa.

The United Nations, the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Small Grants Programme, and Digital Peers International have jointly launched a renewed effort to tackle the escalating plastic waste crisis across the Federal Capital Territory and Nasarawa State. The initiative was announced during the second phase of a project titled “Deploying the Power of IT-Engaged Youths in Effective Plastic Use and Plastic Waste Management 2.0.” The programme is supported by the GEF Small Grants and executed through the United Nations Development Programme, with selected communities in the FCT and Nasarawa earmarked for grassroots interventions driven by technology, youth innovation and community participation.

Speaking to journalists in Abuja, former Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment and National Coordinator of Digital Peers International, Mrs. Odusote Ibukun, raised concerns over the accelerating volume of plastic waste nationwide. She reaffirmed that the crisis demands urgent attention, stressing that young people hold the key to reversing the trend.

According to Nivo News, Ibukun maintained that youths possess the creativity, digital skills and bravery needed to challenge outdated practices and pioneer sustainable solutions. She added that empowering them with the right tools and opportunities would enable them to champion innovations that could reshape their communities and curb plastic pollution.

The partnering organisations also revealed plans to provide financial and technical support for young people who present the most promising ideas for managing plastic waste effectively across affected communities.
