Preliminary investigations indicate that the truck rammed one of the vehicles from behind, causing it to lose control and collide with two other moving cars, triggering a fatal chain reaction. The father, mother, and their young child died instantly, while two other individuals sustained severe injuries.
Authorities confirmed that the truck driver fled the scene immediately after the crash, leaving his vehicle behind and evading responsibility. LASTMA operatives, working alongside other emergency responders, arrived promptly at the scene to rescue survivors and recover the deceased. Two critically injured victims were extricated and handed over to the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) for urgent medical care.
The bodies of the deceased were transferred to the Lagos State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) for evacuation, while the injured were taken to the Lagos State Emergency and Trauma Centre at the Toll Gate. Security personnel from the Isheri Olowora Police Division supported the operation, and LASTMA ensured damaged vehicles were cleared to prevent further accidents.
The response involved multiple agencies, including LASTMA, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), LASAMBUS, SEHMU, and the Lagos Fire and Rescue Service.
LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the incident as “an unbearable tragedy,” mourning the loss of an entire family while offering prayers for the bereaved. He also wished the injured a speedy recovery and stressed that the accident was preventable. Bakare-Oki reiterated warnings against excessive speed, particularly by drivers of heavy trucks, and urged motorists to practice defensive driving and adhere strictly to speed limits. He assured Lagos residents that LASTMA will continue to enhance traffic surveillance, enforce safety regulations, and collaborate with emergency and security agencies to prevent avoidable road tragedies.
