Mass Burial In Adamawa Sparks Outrage Over Alleged Army Killings Of Nine Women.
According to Nivo News, a mass burial was held on Tuesday for nine women reportedly killed during a shooting incident that occurred amid a communal clash in Lamurde Local Government Area (LGA), Adamawa State. The victims were identified as Florence Frank, Suzy Tanko, Marry Talmon, Mercy Kennedy, Lucky Yakubu, Pwamwasari Tami, Mary Shikauno, Destiny Gibson, and Hunbokwama Nickson. Wrapped in mats and laid side by side, the women’s bodies intensified public outrage over what many described as an “unjustified military assault.”
The Bwate Youth Wing, representing the Bachama-speaking communities, used the occasion to strongly condemn the Nigerian Army, asserting that military personnel were directly responsible for the deaths. Abner Kwakano, the Youth Wing’s Secretary-General, said, “We maintain without hesitation that the army opened fire on innocent women, resulting in deaths and injuries. This is the truth as witnessed directly by the community.” The youth group demanded a transparent, independent investigation, warning that anything short of full accountability would dishonor the memory of the victims.
The Nigerian Army, through the Headquarters 23 Brigade Garrison, denied responsibility for the civilian casualties. It stated that a combined security operation involving the Army, Police, NSCDC, and DSS responded to clashes between the Bachama and Chobo communities at around 1:30 AM on Monday, December 8, 2025, over land disputes. During the operation, a militia group suspected of fighting for the Chobo community reportedly attacked troops, resulting in a firefight that left three gunmen neutralized.
According to the Army, while troops were en route to secure the Lamurde LGA Secretariat following a distress call, women allegedly blocked the road to prevent passage, and armed men suspected to be from the Bachama community fired indiscriminately. The Army maintained that no women were shot by its personnel, claiming that two women later brought to the Local Government Lodge died due to the mishandling of weapons by local militias.
The Chobo Youth Forum, however, disputed claims that its tribal militia initiated the violence. In a statement signed by Engr. Gideon Sam, the forum alleged that Chobo communities were the victims, with their villages attacked and burned by a Bachama militia, describing attempts to blame them as “false, misleading, and dangerous.”
Adding to the controversy, Amnesty International’s Nigeria office confirmed that soldiers were responsible for the deaths of the nine women, based on accounts from witnesses and victims’ families.
The Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Oluwatosin Adeola Ajayi, has ordered the immediate release and compensation of Mustapha Marwana, a carpenter who was cleared of suspected links to terrorist activities following a thorough investigation.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
