Kebbi’s N10bn Hajj Loan Sparks Fury Amid Shocking Literacy Crisis.
According to Nivo News, Kebbi State Government’s approval of a N10 billion loan to finance the 2026 Hajj pilgrimage has drawn widespread criticism, with observers questioning the state’s development priorities.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Amid a severe literacy crisis, Governor Nasir Idris’ administration moved to secure additional Hajj seats for residents, sparking concerns among social commentators and civil society figures. Data from the 2024 National Demographic and Health Survey indicate that 95% of children aged 7–14 in Kebbi struggle to read at Primary 2 or 3 level, while 94% cannot perform basic mathematics at the same level. Additionally, 89.4% of adult women are illiterate, with another 6.4% able to read only parts of a sentence.
Sodiq Alabi, a social commentator, remarked that while the government is facilitating Hajj loans, basic educational needs remain largely neglected. Political analyst Mahdi Shehu also condemned the decision as a “misplaced priority,” highlighting widespread poverty, dilapidated infrastructure, and failing health and education systems. On social media, Shehu pointed out that over 2 million children are out of school, hospitals and primary health centres are collapsing, roads are poor, clean drinking water is scarce, and youth unemployment is high.
Critics argue that approving a multi-billion-naira Hajj loan while schools, healthcare facilities, and essential infrastructure remain underfunded raises pressing questions about governance and resource allocation.
In response, the Kebbi State Government defended the loan, stating it was necessary to secure 1,300 additional Hajj seats ahead of the December 5 deadline set by the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON). Alhaji Faruku Aliyu-Yaro, Chairman of the State Pilgrims Welfare Agency, described the loan as a “decisive, compassionate, and people-centred intervention” by Governor Idris, warning that failing to secure it could have led to the loss of hundreds of Hajj seats.
While the government frames the loan as a humanitarian and religious initiative, critics maintain that it underscores the urgent need to prioritize education, poverty alleviation, and infrastructure development in Kebbi State.

Gbenjo’s warning comes amid growing controversy surrounding the late singer’s death and burial arrangements, with reports of disagreements among members of his family.
The gospel singer spoke on Tuesday during a night of tributes held in honour of Toluwanisings in Ibadan, Oyo State. He warned against allowing the situation to degenerate into a controversy similar to the one that followed the death of Nigerian singer Mohbad.
Describing the deceased as a devoted Christian and a genuine servant of God, Gbenjo said Toluwanisings was passionate about his faith and had a good relationship with people.
He urged the public to stop fuelling unnecessary controversy over the late singer’s death, particularly through social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram.
“You can never see Toluwani in the midst of jobless people. He had a good heart. He was a friend to everybody. He served the Lord with all his heart. Don’t turn Toluwani into Mohbad. That madness on TikTok and Instagram must stop. If you are jobless, go and look for a job,” Gbenjo said.
Meanwhile, comedians Ayobami Ajewole, popularly known as Woli Agba, and Olamide Oladimeji, also known as Dele Omo Woli, have threatened legal action against individuals allegedly linking them to Toluwanisings’ death.
Woli Agba disclosed this in a public notice shared on his Instagram page on Sunday.
In the notice issued by their solicitors, Gemgold, the comedians warned members of the public against publishing or circulating allegations they described as false and defamatory against them.
The legal notice maintained that the allegations were baseless and intended to damage the reputations of the two entertainers.
