Court Greenlights ₦40 Billion Defamation Suit Against Minister Wike.

Justice M. A. Hassan scheduled March 25, 2026, for the hearing, following approval of Cole’s request to serve court documents on Wike via substituted means. The case, registered as CV/4502/25, names Wike as the first defendant.
In his statement of claim, Cole, represented by Senior Advocate of Nigeria Jibrin Okutepa (SAN), alleged that Wike made defamatory remarks about him during a September 18 appearance on Channels TV’s Politics Today. According to the claim, the minister’s statements insinuated Cole’s involvement in financial impropriety, mismanagement of state resources, and matters connected to the Rivers State Gas/Olympia Hotel.
Cole described the remarks as “false, malicious, offensive, and damaging” to his reputation, affecting him personally, professionally, and publicly. He stated that the broadcast harmed his character both nationally and internationally, causing humiliation, mental distress, and significant reputational damage.
The former APC candidate is seeking ₦40 billion in damages, along with an additional ₦500 million to cover litigation costs. He is also requesting that Wike be ordered to retract the statements, remove the interview from all platforms, and issue a public apology on Channels TV. Cole further seeks a directive for the apology to be published in at least five national newspapers and a perpetual injunction preventing Wike from making further defamatory statements against him.
During proceedings on Tuesday, Justice Hassan approved an ex parte application by Cole’s counsel, allowing court documents to be posted at the FCT Administration headquarters in Garki, Abuja, after personal service on Wike proved challenging.

He made the remark in Abuja during an end-of-tenure thanksgiving and appreciation service organised by the Nigerian Baptist Convention in honour of its outgoing president, Israel Akanji, and his wife, Victoria.
“If I did not have the conviction for this job, I would not accept it,” he stated.
Reflecting on his decision, Amupitan explained that he was encouraged by what he described as a clear divine assurance before taking up the role.
“The Lord told me, ‘Fear not; do not be dismayed. I will strengthen you; I will help you; I will uphold you.’ I heard this clearly before I accepted this job,” he said.
He noted that this conviction has remained the foundation of his leadership at the commission, despite the complexities of overseeing elections in a challenging democratic setting.
According to him, divine direction has continued to guide him since assuming office, stressing that no challenge is beyond God’s control.
“No matter the storm or difficulty, God is able to bring calm. That is what He has been doing,” he added.
Amupitan also urged Nigerians to keep the electoral body in their prayers ahead of the 2027 general elections, expressing optimism that the exercise could surpass previous standards.
“Keep praying for Nigeria, for us, and for me, that the 2027 election will be the best yet. I cannot achieve this alone, but with God’s help, it is both possible and achievable,” he said.
He further shared his broader perspective on leadership and service, cautioning against taking on responsibilities without a clear sense of calling.
“My experience so far as INEC chairman is simple: if God has not sent you somewhere, do not go there. If He has not assigned you a task, do not take it on,” he said.

Ulasi made the remark on Thursday during an appearance on Arise Television’s Morning Show, where he spoke on emerging political alignments ahead of future elections.
Commenting on the growing cooperation between Obi and former presidential candidate Rabiu Kwankwaso, he said the development reflects ongoing efforts to build broader national consensus.
According to him, both figures wield significant influence in their respective regions, and a potential alliance between them could reshape the country’s political landscape.
“The Obi–Kwankwaso dynamic is part of a broader effort to build bridges across Nigeria. Kwankwaso is a major force in the North, just as Obi is highly influential in the South,” he said.
Ulasi added that if both leaders eventually align and one emerges as president, it could mark the beginning of a new phase of growth and national development.
He also referenced the informal expectation of power rotation, noting that after eight years of northern leadership under Muhammadu Buhari, the South is expected to complete its turn in office.
Describing the potential partnership as a powerful political movement, Ulasi said it could significantly impact the country’s future if successfully executed.
“Given the current political climate, Peter Obi has more than a 60 percent chance of emerging as Nigeria’s president,” he added.

Speaking during a chat with media personality Chude Jideonwo, the actor revealed that he was frequently mocked by children in his neighbourhood. According to him, the taunts were constant and followed him everywhere, with even his siblings sometimes using hurtful nicknames during disagreements, which made the situation more distressing.
He explained that the persistent ridicule took a serious emotional toll on him, leaving him feeling deeply hurt and overwhelmed at times.
Ikedieze also highlighted the crucial role his mother played during those difficult years, noting that she provided unwavering support, comfort, and guidance.
He said she encouraged him to ignore the insults and concentrate on his education, especially since he could not engage in the kind of physical labour other boys his age were doing.
Recalling the experience, he said he often felt unfairly treated by society, but his mother’s advice helped him stay focused and hopeful.
According to him, her encouragement ultimately shaped his path and contributed significantly to his success later in life.
