Appeal Court President Dares Critics: ‘Bring Proof Judges Are Corrupt’.

Published

on

The President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Monica Dongban-Memsem, has challenged critics alleging corruption within the judiciary to present verifiable evidence to support their claims. According to Nivo News, the senior jurist made the remarks on Monday during a special court session in Abuja to formally open the Court of Appeal’s 2025/2026 legal year.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Justice Dongban-Memsem expressed concern over what she described as baseless accusations, insisting that no one has provided proof to justify the repeated claims of judicial misconduct. She maintained that judges remain committed to their duties, noting that support from the Executive arm of government should not automatically be interpreted as wrongdoing but rather as necessary assistance to enhance the Court’s efficiency.

The Appeal Court president criticised the growing trend of lawyers encouraging petitions against judges simply because of unfavourable verdicts. She argued that such actions undermine the integrity of the judicial system and distract judicial officers from their responsibilities. She further highlighted the need for secure and dignified accommodation for judges, referencing the recent killing of a retired Delta State judge who lived in an unsafe environment.

Justice Dongban-Memsem stressed that the risks faced by judges do not end upon retirement, as many remain vulnerable due to past decisions made in the line of duty. She appealed to federal and state authorities to extend housing provisions to all judicial officers rather than restricting such benefits to heads of courts, emphasising that judges devote long hours to reading files, writing judgments, and handling cases without the opportunity for additional income-generating activities.

She noted that judicial officers may occasionally err in their interpretations but insisted that mistakes should be addressed through the established appellate process rather than petitions. She urged dissatisfied parties to pursue appeals where necessary, reminding the public that judicial decisions are meant to be challenged through legal channels, not through politically motivated or vindictive accusations.
