AFCON Shock: Nwabali’s Injury Throws Super Eagles Into Goalkeeping Chaos.
Nigeria’s preparations for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations have suffered a significant setback as first-choice goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali is now unlikely to feature in the tournament due to injury. The situation adds to growing anxiety within the Super Eagles camp, which has been battling a series of fitness concerns and disruptions to its defensive structure ahead of the continental competition.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Nwabali, 29, earned widespread acclaim for his performances at the previous AFCON, where he helped lead Nigeria to the final with his composed displays in goal. However, he has been absent from action since the team’s dramatic penalty shootout loss to DR Congo during the World Cup qualifying playoffs in Rabat.
Fresh doubts over his recovery emerged after Chippa United coach Vusimuzi Vilakazi offered a strong indication that the goalkeeper may not be ready in time for the tournament. According to Nivo News, Vilakazi revealed that Nwabali has been dealing with multiple injuries and requires surgery. He noted that the shot-stopper is battling an ankle problem in addition to a hand injury that worsened during his time in Morocco. Despite Nwabali’s optimism about recovering quickly, his coach admitted that the reality remains uncertain.
Nigeria’s head coach, Eric Chelle, has included Nwabali in his provisional squad but has yet to confirm the final list of 27 players. The Super Eagles will begin their AFCON campaign in Group C with a fixture against Tanzania in Fes, followed by matches against Tunisia and Uganda in what is expected to be a tightly contested group.
The squad has already been hit by other setbacks, with young defenders Benjamin Fredrick and Felix Agu ruled out, while Ola Aina and Taiwo Awoniyi continue to struggle with fitness issues. Former captain William Troost-Ekong, who was named the Most Valuable Player at the last AFCON, has also retired after earning 83 caps, leaving a leadership gap in the defensive line.
With two centre-backs unavailable and Nwabali’s participation looking doubtful, Chelle may be forced to restructure his defensive set-up just days before the tournament begins. Should the goalkeeper fail to recover in time, the coach will have to choose from Amas Obasogie, Maduka Okoye, Adebayo Adeleye, Francis Uzoho, and teenage prospect Ebenezer Harcourt. While Okoye and Uzoho bring international experience, their inconsistent form has raised concerns, and the remaining trio are yet to feature in a major tournament.
