The governors, under the umbrella of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF), convened for a two-day strategic retreat in Lagos, where they examined key national issues. The meeting was hosted by Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu at the Eko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island.

Led by Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, the Forum issued a communiqué expressing confidence in Nigeria’s potential to remain united, stable and prosperous despite prevailing challenges. The governors also reviewed the country’s security situation, praising President Tinubu for what they described as improved synergy among federal, state and local security systems, as well as the commitment of security personnel and community volunteers.

Reading the communiqué, Governor Uzodimma said the Forum resolved to reinforce the President’s efforts by strengthening community-driven security strategies, intelligence-gathering networks, conflict-prevention systems and support mechanisms for victims of violence and disasters. He noted that the Forum commended the President’s restructuring of Nigeria’s security architecture and reaffirmed that the protection of citizens remained a government priority.

The PGF also evaluated Nigeria’s political and socio-economic landscape, maintaining that the core objective of ongoing reforms is to enhance living standards, preserve human dignity and broaden opportunities for the population. The governors applauded President Tinubu’s determination to stabilise the economy and establish long-term growth through the Renewed Hope Agenda.

Acknowledging the temporary hardships associated with macro-economic reforms, the Forum expressed appreciation for the patience and resilience of Nigerians. Governors pledged to intensify state-led interventions in critical areas such as food availability, support for small businesses, youth employment, social protection, and relief packages for workers and low-income households. They emphasised their commitment to collaborate with federal and local governments to ensure reforms deliver tangible improvements and that no segment of the population is excluded.

The Forum further highlighted the importance of infrastructure, urban renewal and rural development in boosting productivity and improving quality of life. The governors commended Lagos State for its leadership in transportation reforms, urban development and innovative financing models, while committing to strengthen inter-state collaboration and peer-learning.

They resolved to expand investments in roads, housing, public transportation, water and sanitation, digital access and climate-resilient amenities, ensuring such projects are inclusive, environmentally responsible and accessible to youth, women and persons with disabilities.

Uzodimma noted that effective local governance was critical to achieving the Renewed Hope Agenda at the grassroots. The Forum committed to advancing reforms that enhance transparency, accountability and service delivery within local government systems, while expanding citizen-engagement platforms such as town hall meetings and consultations with traditional leaders, civil society, professional groups, youths and women’s organisations.

The PGF reaffirmed its loyalty to the APC and commended the party’s leadership for strengthening internal democracy, reconciliation and inclusiveness. The governors pledged to continue playing a stabilising role within the party while ensuring the APC remains focused on delivering its mandate to Nigerians.

They also restated their support for President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, stressing that APC governors consider themselves custodians of the people’s mandate and are committed to translating citizens’ aspirations into real social and economic progress across the country. The Forum underscored the need for national unity, inter-faith harmony and mutual respect, urging leaders to use their platforms to promote peace and discourage hate speech and criminality.
