Air Marshal Aneke met with the aircrew to assess their condition and to commend their professionalism and prompt decision-making, which were pivotal in ensuring a safe ejection despite the aircraft’s failure.
The Alpha Jet, which had taken off from Kainji, crashed a few kilometres from Karabonde town in the Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State on Saturday. The Nigerian Air Force confirmed that the aircraft suffered a technical fault shortly after take-off.
The pilots, demonstrating exceptional skill, maneuvered the jet away from populated areas before ejecting safely, preventing potential casualties. Both airmen are undergoing routine medical checks and are reported to be in stable condition.
Air Marshal Aneke praised the pilots’ composure and quick thinking, emphasizing that their actions not only saved their lives but also protected nearby communities from harm. “The professionalism displayed by the pilots under such stressful circumstances is commendable. Their actions undoubtedly saved lives and prevented a worse outcome,” he said.
Aneke has directed the immediate formation of a Board of Inquiry to investigate the incident and determine the cause of the aircraft malfunction. “The investigation will provide a detailed analysis of the situation to ensure that such incidents are avoided in the future,” he added.
The Nigerian Air Force confirmed that search and rescue teams, fire and crash response units, and medical personnel responded promptly to secure the crash site and ensure the pilots’ safety. The incident highlights the inherent risks of military aviation and the high demands placed on air force personnel to maintain operational readiness. The Air Force reassured the public that it strictly adheres to safety protocols and remains committed to protecting lives and property.
