Tinubu’s Order Takes Full Effect As Police Enforce Nationwide Ban On VIP Protection.

In a statement issued on Saturday via the Force’s official platform, Force Public Relations Officer CSP Benjamin Hundeyin announced that the monitoring operation began in Lagos on December 6, 2025, at about 10:00 am. The enforcement team reportedly covered major locations across the state, including the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge, the domestic terminal of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, and several other strategic checkpoints.
Hundeyin stated that the level of compliance observed during the exercise was “satisfactory and commendable,” noting that no cases of unauthorised escort deployment were recorded and no arrests were made throughout the operation. He described the outcome as a confirmation that the presidential directive was being obeyed in Lagos.
Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD, NPM, reaffirmed the Force’s determination to fully enforce the directive, stressing that redeploying officers to core policing responsibilities would significantly strengthen national security efforts. He maintained that the Police Force remains committed to assignments that directly support public safety and crime prevention.
Hundeyin added that the nationwide implementation of the directive would continue without fear or favour, urging Nigerians to support ongoing reforms aimed at building a more efficient and people-focused policing system.
President Tinubu’s order mandating the withdrawal of police personnel from VIP protection duties followed a high-level security meeting with service chiefs and the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS) on November 23 in Abuja. A statement earlier issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, clarified that VIPs requiring security would now receive armed protection from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) instead of the police.
According to Nivo News, the policy aims to free up more police officers for frontline operations, particularly in areas with limited security presence, thereby boosting the country’s overall safety and emergency response capacity.
