Buratai Fires Back: Ex-Army Chief Slams “Malicious” Terror-Financing Allegations.
Former Chief of Army Staff and Nigeria’s Ambassador to the Benin Republic, Lt. General Tukur Buratai (rtd), has firmly rejected fresh allegations linking him to terrorism financing, describing them as baseless and deliberately concocted to smear his reputation. According to Nivo News, the retired military chief issued the rebuttal on Saturday through a statement signed by former Army spokesperson, Brig. General Sani Kukasheka Usman (rtd), in response to an online publication that listed him and other prominent Nigerians as purportedly connected to terrorism financiers.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The statement described the allegations as “false, unfounded, and mischievous,” insisting that Buratai had never, at any point in his decades-long military career, been invited, interrogated, or investigated by any national or international body regarding terrorism financing. It stressed that no security agency, intelligence institution, judicial panel, diplomatic entity, or oversight mechanism had ever linked him with such activities.
Buratai dismissed the claims as mere personal assertions reportedly made by Major General Danjuma Ali-Keffi (rtd) and published online without verification. He described the report as a “misrepresentation driven by malice,” noting that similar attempts in the past to tarnish his image had repeatedly collapsed due to his transparent and honourable service to the nation.
The statement highlighted Buratai’s more than four decades of service marked by “honour, courage, and steadfast commitment,” particularly his leadership in the fight against Boko Haram and ISWAP, where the Nigerian Army reclaimed territories, restored governance, and facilitated the return of displaced citizens. It argued that it was illogical to suggest that someone who led major offensives against terrorist groups could be associated with the same elements he spent years confronting.
Buratai’s legal team has demanded an immediate retraction and public apology from the online platform and Major General Ali-Keffi (rtd). The statement warned that failure to comply would compel the former Army chief to initiate legal action to defend his name and seek appropriate redress over what it described as a malicious attack.
