The initiative was carried out under the Renewed Hope Initiative, which was launched simultaneously across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory and aims to reach 9,500 PWDs nationwide. In Abia State, the distribution exercise was overseen by Priscilla Chidinma Otti, wife of Governor Alex Otti, who noted that the grants were more than financial empowerment but an investment in dignity, independence and inclusion for persons living with disabilities. She reaffirmed the commitment to ensuring that PWDs fully participate in education, healthcare and economic opportunities.
Chairman of the Abia State Disabilities Commission, David Anyaele, also praised the gesture, describing it as a recognition of the resilience and potential of PWDs and a step toward sustaining their productivity.
In Ekiti State, the disbursement took place at Lady Jibowu Hall in Ado-Ekiti, where the state’s First Lady, Dr Olayemi Oyebanji, presented the grants. She emphasized that the nation becomes stronger when every citizen is empowered to contribute, stressing that the programme was designed to ensure no Nigerian is sidelined. She further highlighted that the Renewed Hope Initiative had supported more than 100,000 women petty traders and small business owners, including PWDs, within two years.
In Nasarawa State, First Lady Silifat Abdullahi-Sule supervised the grant distribution and encouraged beneficiaries to invest the funds prudently to grow their businesses. The state Commissioner for Women Affairs, Hauwa Jugbo, explained that the support would help small business owners recapitalise, expand their ventures and improve economic and social inclusion.
