Borno State Restores 45 Christian Worship Centers Amid Calls For Unity And Peace.

The governor made the remarks during a high-level consultative meeting with leaders of Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI) and the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) at the Government House in Maiduguri. The meeting focused on strengthening collaboration between the state government and religious organizations to tackle insecurity and promote lasting peace.
Addressing the gathering, Zulum stressed the pivotal role of religious leaders in fostering tolerance, unity, and social cohesion. “We must collectively reject narratives that frame our security challenges in religious terms. Boko Haram’s attacks target our civilization and humanity, affecting Muslims and Christians alike. Both mosques and churches have been destroyed indiscriminately,” he said.
He further noted that the majority of victims have been Muslims, underscoring the indiscriminate nature of the violence. “While every life lost is tragic, the data clearly shows that more Muslims than Christians have suffered death, abduction, and displacement. This shared tragedy calls for a united response, as suffering recognizes no sect,” Zulum said.
On reconstruction efforts, the governor highlighted that the Borno State Government has rebuilt 45 Christian worship centers destroyed during the insurgency. “Our reconstruction and resettlement initiatives are driven by justice, equity, and inclusivity, not by religion or ethnicity. We rebuild based on need and our commitment to restoring communities,” he explained.
Zulum also reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring the welfare and protection of all citizens. He urged religious leaders to consistently preach peace and discourage divisive rhetoric. He called on the international community to assist in addressing the root causes of insurgency, including poverty, illiteracy, and hunger, while supporting military capabilities.
In response, CAN Chairman and Auxiliary Bishop of Maiduguri, Most Rev. John Bogna Bakeni, emphasized that Nigeria’s challenges must be resolved locally and praised the governor’s call for fairness and justice in governance. Representatives of JNI also commended Zulum’s leadership and reaffirmed their commitment to interfaith dialogue and peace.
