The governor reaffirmed the ban while signing the order at Government House in Uyo, emphasizing the need to protect public safety and uphold citizens’ rights. He instructed the Commissioner of Police and other security agencies to enforce full compliance.
“Anyone caught violating this order will be arrested and prosecuted,” Governor Eno stated. “These masquerades have caused havoc in some local governments. As the chief security officer of the State, I am directing the Commissioner of Police and security agencies to stop this terror and ensure peace for our citizens.”
While acknowledging the cultural significance of masquerades, Governor Eno stressed that no tradition should endanger the public. He cited recent incidents, including an attack on a young woman, as examples of how such activities have escalated into public threats.
The governor reminded the public that a 2022 law already requires police approval for masquerade activities and clarified that any performances should now be limited to village squares. “If you want to play masquerade, do it in your village square, not on the streets of Akwa Ibom,” he warned.
Governor Eno also urged residents and community leaders to familiarize themselves with the order, highlighting the importance of maintaining public order as the state prepares for an influx of visitors during the festive season.
The Commissioner of Police, Baba Azare, commended the governor’s directive, noting that it equips security agencies with the authority to tackle masquerade-related violence, intimidation, and disruption across all 31 local government areas. Azare confirmed that enforcement had already begun, with operational instructions dispatched to area commanders and tactical units to ensure full compliance.
