Tinubu Approves Protection For Guinea-Bissau Candidate As Military Coup Sparks Chaos.
Nigeria has clarified the circumstances under which it granted asylum to Guinea-Bissau’s opposition presidential candidate, Fernando Dias da Costa, following alleged threats to his life in the aftermath of last Wednesday’s military coup. Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed strong disapproval of the coup, urging an immediate return to constitutional governance. The ministry noted that consultations are underway with international partners to ensure a rapid restoration of stability in the Portuguese-speaking West African nation.
In a letter dated November 30 and addressed to ECOWAS Commission President Omar Touray, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, confirmed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved Da Costa’s asylum following credible threats to his safety. Tuggar also appealed to the ECOWAS Stabilization Support Mission in Guinea-Bissau to provide additional protection for the opposition candidate within the Nigerian embassy.
The authenticity of the correspondence was verified by Tuggar’s Special Assistant on Media and Communications Strategy, Alkasim Abdulkadir, who said Nigeria’s decision aligns with its long-standing commitment to regional peace, democratic governance, and the prevention of further escalation in Guinea-Bissau. He emphasized that the intervention reflects Nigeria’s responsibility to promote human security, social cohesion, and broader stability across the West African sub-region.
In response to the unfolding crisis, ECOWAS convened an emergency virtual meeting and subsequently suspended Guinea-Bissau from the bloc until constitutional order is fully restored.
