Ayegbeni Blasts Chelle Over ‘Voodoo’ Claim After Nigeria’s World Cup Crash.
According to Nivo News, former Super Eagles striker Yakubu Ayegbeni has strongly criticised national team coach Eric Chelle over his controversial claim that “voodoo” contributed to Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Ayegbeni said the comment not only lacked credibility but also dragged the country’s reputation into disrepute.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Nigeria’s qualification hopes ended after a tense CAF play-off final in Rabat, where DR Congo clinched victory on penalties. Chancel Mbemba, who had earlier helped his team seal their semi-final triumph over Cameroon, delivered the decisive spot-kick that secured Congo’s advancement.
Reports indicate that Chelle confronted members of the Congolese technical bench immediately after the shoot-out, later attempting to justify his actions by alleging that “the players of Congo did some voodoo”. His comments have since sparked backlash across the football community.
Ayegbeni, who featured prominently in the Premier League for clubs including Everton and Portsmouth, described the coach’s remarks as “embarrassing”, insisting that Nigeria’s defeat was down to poor execution rather than any supernatural influence. He argued that if voodoo truly determined results, an African nation would have long won the World Cup.
He added that Chelle should have displayed sportsmanship by congratulating DR Congo instead of “bringing shame to Nigeria”. Ayegbeni further criticised the coach’s behaviour during the confrontation that followed the shoot-out, saying it reflected poorly on both Chelle and the country.
Nigeria’s penalty woes were evident from the start as Calvin Bassey and Moses Simon missed their opening attempts, while Semi Ajayi’s effort was saved by Timothy Fayulu during sudden death. The match had earlier been forced to penalties after Frank Onyeka gave Nigeria the lead with a deflected strike, before Meschak Elia capitalised on a Wilfried Ndidi error to equalise before halftime.
DR Congo, who last appeared at the World Cup in 1974 when they competed as Zaire, have now progressed to the inter-continental play-offs scheduled for March. They will face nations such as Bolivia and New Caledonia as they continue their quest for a long-awaited return to football’s biggest stage.
