Acting Captain of the Guard Polo Club, Abba Kangiwa, confirmed that preparations are in advanced stages, with tournament organizers, team patrons, and players fine-tuning strategies ahead of the week-long event. The festival, renowned for its thrilling competition and grandeur, remains one of the key attractions of the annual Abuja City Carnival, which combines sports, culture, and tourism.
In anticipation of the tournament, the resort has undergone extensive upgrades, including improvements to the turf, clubhouse, stables, and surrounding areas. Players and their horses are also engaging in rigorous practice sessions to ensure peak performance.
Since its inception in 2009, the Abuja Carnival Polo Tournament has been celebrated for blending the elegance of polo with Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage. The 2025 edition promises to elevate this experience further, attracting top teams and an impressive audience. Major prizes include the coveted President Cup, the FCT Minister’s Cup, the Legislative Shield, and the Guards Brigade Trophy, alongside several subsidiary awards.
Regular participants such as the Nigerian Police, Nigerian Army, Rubicon, and Jos Malcomines are expected to compete fiercely for top honors. Last year, the STL Polo Team, powered by Seyi Tinubu, captured the Moniepoint Cup after a gripping final against Rubicon, demonstrating technical skill and determination. Max Air secured their first Legislative Shield, while FK3 Warriors triumphed in the FCT Minister’s Cup.
The 2025 festival is also expected to draw a distinguished guest list, including government officials, state governors, traditional rulers, business leaders, and diplomats, underscoring the event’s status as the premier polo and tourism celebration in the Federal Capital Territory.
