Oshiomhole Condemns Judges For Slashing Death Sentences, Calls For Judicial Reforms.

Published

According to Nivo News, Senator Adams Oshiomhole of Edo North has strongly criticized the judiciary for reducing death sentences in capital offence cases. Speaking during Senate deliberations on national security, Oshiomhole described the practice as unacceptable, asserting that it undermines the rule of law and public confidence in the justice system.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The senator questioned the legality of substituting death penalties with 20-year prison terms in cases involving armed robbery, kidnapping, and terrorism that result in fatalities. He referred specifically to a recent ruling by a Federal High Court in Abuja, where a leader of the Ansaru terrorist group received a 20-year sentence instead of the death penalty.

“How can someone carrying a death sentence end up with twenty years in prison? That is not acceptable,” Oshiomhole declared. He accused some judges of issuing “sentimental or compromised judgments,” insisting that judicial officers must strictly interpret and enforce laws as enacted by the National Assembly.

Oshiomhole emphasized that only the President has the authority to commute or reduce sentences when justified. He expressed concern that lenient rulings often negate the risks and efforts undertaken by security agencies and prosecutors to secure convictions, warning that such inconsistencies embolden criminals and erode public trust in the justice system.

Highlighting the imbalance in sentencing, Oshiomhole pointed out cases where individuals acting in self-defence, such as farmers protecting their land, face severe penalties, while perpetrators of attacks often evade justice.

The senator urged both the federal government and the judiciary to reform sentencing practices, emphasizing that consistent and fair application of the law is critical to maintaining public confidence and addressing Nigeria’s security challenges.

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has uncovered a suspected baby factory in Badagry, Lagos State, rescuing 28 persons during the operation.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

According to reports, the victims include 18 adults and 10 children, among them 17 pregnant women, alongside one suspected miscarriage case, while two suspects were also arrested.

Lagos NSCDC Commandant, Adedotun Keshinro, said the raid was carried out around midnight on Wednesday after weeks of intelligence gathering.

He explained that the facility, located in Okuju-Ilado, Badagry, consisted of multiple apartments and had been under surveillance for about three weeks before the operation.

Keshinro alleged that the operators lured pregnant women with financial incentives and made them sign agreements before restricting their movement inside the premises.

He added that a fake social media account was reportedly used to attract victims and direct them into private communications.

One of the suspects, however, claimed the women came voluntarily and denied any form of coercion, insisting the arrangement was legal.

A rescued victim said she entered the facility on her own after being abandoned by the man responsible for her pregnancy.

Community leaders in the area said residents had earlier noticed suspicious activities but were unaware of what was truly happening until the raid was carried out.

The NSCDC confirmed that the suspects and rescued victims will be handed over to the appropriate anti-trafficking agency for further investigation.
