Gumi Sparks Debate: Cleric Says Kanu Could Walk Free Under One Condition.

Published

on

According to Nivo News, prominent Islamic scholar Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has stated that he is willing to support ongoing demands for the release of detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, on the condition that Kanu expresses remorse and openly advocates for peace. Gumi made the comment during an appearance on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Tuesday.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The cleric argued that Kanu could still qualify for amnesty, noting that past administrations extended similar gestures to individuals whose actions were regarded as confrontational or hostile to the Nigerian state. He referenced former President Shehu Shagari’s amnesty for Chukwuemeka Ojukwu, as well as the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua’s pardon for Niger Delta militants, insisting that reconciliation has long been part of Nigeria’s nation-building approach.

Gumi reaffirmed his advocacy for non-kinetic strategies in addressing insecurity and reiterated his belief that a force-driven approach alone will not resolve the country’s complex security challenges. He questioned why military solutions are consistently prioritised despite clearer pathways to peaceful engagement. According to him, the Nigerian Army—like others around the world—is not structured to fully combat guerrilla-style threats.

He maintained that groups in the North, including some herders, have shown willingness to embrace dialogue, arguing that similar outreach efforts toward other armed groups such as IPOB and Boko Haram have become more difficult over time. Gumi stressed that he supports anyone who shows genuine interest in peace, adding that the government should take advantage of opportunities to de-escalate tensions rather than rely solely on kinetic responses.

According to the source, the twins maintained a daily routine of speaking around midnight, but the conversation took a sudden turn that night when unusual activity was noticed at the General’s end.

He said the line went dead abruptly after the General paused during the call, apparently due to the unfolding situation at the base.

The twin brother reportedly made repeated attempts to reconnect, sending messages and calling continuously, but received no response throughout the night.

“He kept trying until about 4 am, but there was no answer,” the source said.

The family later confirmed the tragedy after a senior military officer contacted them around 6:30 am, informing them that the base had come under attack and that the Brigade Commander was among those killed.

The relative described the incident as devastating, noting that communication had broken down during the assault.

The late General was later buried alongside other fallen soldiers in Maiduguri, Borno State.

He wrote, “Chiemeka Chibuzor’s wedding is hereby suspended. More than a thousand applications. No more wedding pending further directive from me.”

The cleric had earlier this week publicly invited proposals for her marriage, setting conditions that included the suitor being young and in good physical and mental health, alongside promised financial support and housing benefits.

He also said the couple would enjoy lifelong support, including shared property ownership and periodic welfare checks from church members.

The development follows a similar arrangement recently conducted by the church involving a non-verbal autistic man who was married in a ceremony organised by the ministry.
