Guardiola Admits ‘Shame’ After Heated Clash With Cameraman Following Newcastle Defeat
According to Nivo News, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has issued an apology after a tense exchange with a cameraman during his side’s 2-1 loss to Newcastle United, saying he felt “embarrassed” after watching the footage of the incident.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Guardiola’s emotions spilled over at St James’ Park as a series of contentious decisions went against his team, including a denied penalty, a suspected handball and a close offside call. At the final whistle, he marched across the pitch to confront referee Sam Barrott, but he also stopped abruptly in front of a cameraman, removed the operator’s headphones and spoke directly into his ear.
The manager declined to repeat what he said in that heated moment but stressed that he immediately apologised. “I feel embarrassed, ashamed when I see it. I don’t like it,” he said. “I apologised after one second to the cameraman. I am who I am. After 1,000 games, I’m not a perfect person; I make huge mistakes. The reason is that I want to defend my team and my club.”
The tension extended beyond Guardiola. City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma was escorted down the tunnel, while Newcastle’s Joelinton was restrained by manager Eddie Howe. Guardiola also exchanged words with Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes, though he insisted there was no hostility between them.
“We’ve known Bruno for years,” he said. “After every game, whether at St James’ or the Etihad, we always talk. I don’t know what happened today, but I have a very good relationship with him. I’m emotional; I love to talk, move my hands, my arms—everything.”
Manchester City now turn their focus to Tuesday’s Champions League clash against Bayer Leverkusen. The fixture marks Guardiola’s 100th Champions League match in charge of the club, a tenure that includes the 2023 victory in Istanbul along with past disappointments such as the 2021 final defeat to Chelsea and the dramatic 2022 exit to Real Madrid.
Highlighting City’s remarkable consistency, Guardiola noted that they remain the only English club to qualify for 14 consecutive Champions League campaigns. “Every weekend is a milestone,” he said. “Every season we have been there, and hopefully next season we will be there too. To challenge yourself with the best teams in Europe is an incredible experience. For the club, in terms of repetition, prestige, and financial issues, it’s massively important.”
