PINL Unleashes Town Criers As Vandalism Drops By 87% On TNP Corridor.
Pipeline Infrastructure Nigeria Limited (PINL) has introduced a new community-driven communication strategy that deploys town criers to strengthen real-time security awareness along the Eastern Corridor of the Trans Niger Pipeline (TNP). According to Nivo News, the initiative was unveiled by the company’s General Manager for Community and Stakeholders Relations, Dr. Akpos Mezeh, during its monthly engagement meeting with host communities in Port Harcourt.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Mezeh explained that the decision to appoint two town criers—one male and one female—in each host community was a recommendation from stakeholders at the previous meeting and has now been formally approved. He noted that these town criers would help circulate verified information, support ongoing sensitisation campaigns, and improve early-warning intelligence across communities.
The introduction of the town criers has already enhanced communication flow among the 215 host communities in Rivers, Bayelsa, Imo, and Abia States, ultimately promoting PINL’s mandate to sustain uninterrupted production on the TNP. Mezeh further revealed that attempted pipeline vandalism had reduced by over 87 percent compared to 2022, attributing the progress to expanded surveillance operations and strengthened trust between the company, traditional rulers, youth groups, and community contractors.
The King of Ahoada Kingdom, His Majesty Noble Uwoh, commended the company’s model, describing it as an outstanding example of community inclusion. He said the firm’s transparent feedback system and empowerment initiatives had encouraged other organisations to adopt similar people-focused strategies. Also, the Paramount Ruler of Owaza Community in Ukwa West Local Government Area of Abia State, HM Eze Obioma Nworgu, appealed for more job opportunities for youths and further investments in local infrastructure while calling for continuous cooperation to secure the pipeline.
In Eleme, a community previously burdened by frequent acts of vandalism, the Chairman of the Akpajo Community Development Committee, Mr. Oliver Nwidag, said the area had witnessed a remarkable turnaround since PINL took over responsibility for safeguarding the pipeline. The Head of Field Operations for the Eastern Corridor at the Project Monitoring Office of NNPCL, Engr. Akponine Omojevwe, also praised the partnership between PINL and host communities, describing it as vital to maintaining the integrity of the TNP.
