Yakubu: Time To Look Beyond Familiar Faces For Super Eagles Coaching Role.
Former Super Eagles striker Yakubu Aiyegbeni has called on the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to look beyond Samson Siasia and Augustine Eguavoen in its search for a new national team coach. According to Aiyegbeni, Nigeria must break away from the pattern of recycling former coaches and adopt a fresh approach.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Aiyegbeni’s remarks come amid uncertainty over current coach Eric Chelle’s future following Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. Despite not losing any of their eight competitive matches in regular time, Chelle’s side fell short in the playoff against DR Congo, intensifying calls for a review of the team’s leadership.
Speaking on the Home Turf podcast, Aiyegbeni cautioned against making drastic changes so close to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. He emphasized the importance of long-term planning, saying, “Why do we always find it difficult to get a decisive coach when it matters? We say we need a foreign coach, and I agree, we still need a foreign coach. It’s too close (to the AFCON) to bring in another coach.”
He dismissed the notion of returning to former coaches, stressing that the team requires a new direction. “I don’t think Siasia or Eguavoen are needed anymore. We’ve gone past that era. I think we should try to sit together and look for whom to bring. It’s time to move forward, not backwards,” Aiyegbeni said.
Nigeria’s coaching landscape has been turbulent for more than a decade, with four different coaches leading the team during the recent World Cup and AFCON qualifying cycle. Jose Peseiro started the qualifiers, followed briefly by Finidi George. Eguavoen guided the team into AFCON, and Chelle managed the playoffs. Eguavoen has had five separate stints as Super Eagles coach, while Siasia managed the team twice. By contrast, only a few European coaches, including Gernot Rohr, who spent five years in charge, have enjoyed long-term tenures.
