Nnamdi Kanu’s Conviction Sparks International Alarm As US Rep Raises Persecution Claims.
According to Nivo News, United States lawmaker and former Chairman of the Africa Subcommittee, Representative John James, has asserted that the ongoing case involving the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, reflects what he described as rising Christian persecution in Nigeria.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
James made the statement on Thursday during a public hearing reviewing President Donald Trump’s recent decision to redesignate Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern. He maintained that the alleged political pressure in Nigeria is interwoven with what he called institutional decline and systematic repression.
The congressman emphasised that Nigeria’s Court of Appeal had, in 2022, dismissed the charges against Kanu and ordered his release—a directive he said has yet to be honoured. He added that the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention had also demanded Kanu’s unconditional freedom.
According to him, Kanu remains in solitary confinement under worsening health conditions and was recently forced to represent himself in court. James argued that Nigeria’s actions signal a troubling disregard for the rule of law and an environment where targeting Christians appears permissible.
He noted that despite appeals from citizens and lawmakers, Kanu was convicted of all charges earlier in the day. The hearing, held in Washington, DC, featured senior officials from the US State Department as well as Nigerian religious leaders.
