MI Abaga Speaks Out: Why Many Nigerians Go Broke Trying To Impress Others.
Nigerian rap veteran MI Abaga has shed light on the widespread culture of broke-shaming in the country, describing it as a damaging social pressure that pushes many people into unnecessary financial burdens. According to Nivo News, the award-winning artiste spoke during a conversation with media host Chude Jideonwu on the WithChude podcast, where he reflected on the personal choices that helped him resist societal expectations.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The 44-year-old explained that he discovered early in his career that many Nigerians judge people based on perceived wealth, a habit that often forces individuals to spend beyond their means to avoid ridicule. He noted that he deliberately refused to succumb to that pressure, adding that allowing other people’s opinions to dictate one’s lifestyle only gives them “excessive power.”
MI Abaga said it took years to build the mental strength to remain unfazed by such judgment. He stressed that chasing public validation is one of the quickest ways people run into financial difficulty, as they constantly try to prove a point rather than live within their reality.
He argued that the obsession with public perception remains a challenge for many Nigerians, especially in a country where statistics show that most citizens are not financially stable. Abaga added that even when people mock him or attempt to broke-shame him, he reminds himself that past celebrities who once flaunted luxury—such as private jets—eventually learned that life follows its course. He maintained that broke-shaming is rarely personal but a reflection of societal attitudes.
