Shocking Decline In Women’s Leadership Roles Sparks Fresh National Debate.
According to Nivo News, the Federal Government and key institutions have been urged to place stronger emphasis on gender inclusion as a cornerstone of national development and sustainable governance. This call was made by Women in Successful Careers (WISCAR) during a media briefing ahead of its Annual Leadership and Mentoring Conference scheduled to take place next week in Lagos.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Founder and Chairperson of WISCAR, Mrs. Amina Oyagbola, stressed that gender inclusion has become a critical driver of democratic stability and national progress. She acknowledged improvements in some sectors but noted that women still remain significantly under-represented in vital leadership positions across the country. She revealed that women currently occupy only 16.7 per cent of federal cabinet positions and hold less than 10 per cent of elected offices nationwide.
At the local government level, women’s representation has dwindled further, with only 3.7 per cent of council chairmanship positions occupied by women—a sharp decline compared to previous years. Oyagbola argued that the figures highlight deep-rooted structural inequalities, emphasising that women are not mere participants in nation-building but are central to national transformation.
She pointed to encouraging indicators within the corporate space, noting that women now hold 31.1 per cent of board seats in NGX30 companies, alongside five female chief executives currently heading major firms—a milestone in the country’s corporate landscape. However, she identified inadequate funding as a major barrier hindering women from contesting political offices, explaining that long-standing cultural and institutional structures have historically restricted women’s access to financial networks.
Speaking further, she questioned how many women have the financial backing required to run for office, noting that men often secure millions through established networks, while such structures are still unavailable to many women. She insisted that meaningful progress in inclusion must address these funding gaps.
WISCAR’s Executive Secretary, Ekemini Akpakpan, disclosed that the organisation has trained over 600 graduates through its diverse mentoring tracks. Conference Organising Chair, Mrs. Tokunboh George-Taylor, announced that this year’s edition will include fireside chats, networking forums, and wellness activities aimed at enhancing women’s personal and professional growth.
The 2025 conference, themed “Claiming our future: Women in leadership and policy transformation,” will focus on shifting from policy declarations to practical implementation. A highlight of the event will be the graduation of 105 mentees from the inaugural Women in Law Mentoring Programme, supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. WISCAR will also unveil two major honours—the Ambassador and Mrs. A. I. Atta HeForShe Award for male allies promoting gender inclusion, and the Prof. Grace Alele-Williams Alumni Impact Award to celebrate outstanding alumnae.
The keynote address will be delivered by the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola. Other speakers expected include the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Jumoke Oduwole; Founder of WARIF, Dr. Kemi Dasilva-Ibru; and CEO of the Nigerian Economic Summit Group, Dr. Tayo Aduloju. A high-level panel will feature Sterling Bank CEO Abubakar Suleiman; Stanbic IBTC Deputy Head of Operations, Funke Amobi; MTN Foundation Executive Director, Odunayo Sanya; WILAN Executive Director, Abosede George-Ogan; and Nigeria Governors’ Spouses Forum CEO, Hauwa Haliru-Hassan.
The conference is expected to gather leaders from government, business, and civil society to explore actionable solutions for boosting women’s leadership and translating gender equity commitments into measurable impact. Also present at the briefing were WISCAR Advisory Board member Adebayo Oyagbola and planning committee members Folake Owodunni and Kemi Dallas.
