House Of Reps Moves To Close Loopholes In Crude And Non-Oil Exports.

The House of Representatives’ ad-hoc committee investigating pre-shipment inspection failures and non-remittance of crude oil proceeds has pledged to tackle persistent revenue leakages in Nigeria’s oil and non-oil exports.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Addressing members during a capacity-building workshop in Abuja, the committee chairman, Seyi Sowunmi, emphasized that Nigeria’s continued financial losses—running into billions of dollars—represent tangible deficits in hospitals, schools, and essential infrastructure, all of which could have been funded if pre-shipment regulations were adhered to.

Sowunmi explained that the committee was established in response to evidence of systemic exploitation in both crude and non-oil exports. He stressed that the investigation is a national mission aimed at strengthening economic governance rather than targeting individuals.

“This committee is determined to close loopholes, recover lost revenue, and restore confidence in Nigeria’s economic management. For the first time, we are examining the entire export chain—from crude oil flows to financial repatriation—through a transparent, data-driven approach,” Sowunmi said.

The workshop was designed to equip lawmakers with the technical expertise needed to navigate export data, maritime operations, and financial intelligence. Experts in trade compliance, forensic auditing, and international oil transactions facilitated the training, highlighting it as an investment in competence, credibility, and national integrity.

While welcoming public scrutiny as a hallmark of a thriving democracy, Sowunmi stressed the importance of transitioning to a system where every exported barrel is digitally tracked and all proceeds are accounted for. He called on lawmakers to strengthen legislative oversight and champion reforms that ensure natural resource revenues benefit Nigerians, warning that the era of unaccounted exports is ending.
